Passage: Genesis 41:37-52
It is not insignificant nor improbable that God would use the words of a pagan foreign ruler in the second millennium B.C. to point us to the Savior of the world.
The Pharaoh of Egypt needed to find peace after his dreams and he called upon Joseph to interpret them. Joseph put forth a plan to overcome the famine presented in the dreams, then afterwards the Pharaoh said,
Genesis 41:38 (ESV)
38 And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?”
This is an example of God's sovereign rule over the kings of the earth and over every word that is spoken. Pharaoh did not suddenly recognize and serve the living God. He certainly did not know that he was pointing us to the Savior of the world. He only knew that something was different about this Hebrew slave who interprets dreams and shows administration skills. Pharaoh's view of the pantheon of gods was still the same. None the less, he spoke prophetically pointing us to the One who would come.
“Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?” Isn't this the whole dilemma presented in Genesis? If only we can find the "seed" of the woman who would crush the Serpents head since the fall! The One to whom all creation points! Genesis tells us that we should look for the promised seed and a descendant of Abraham. The One in whom the Spirit of God is because he is God in the flesh!
Pharaoh recognized Joseph as a man in whom the Spirit of God dwelt. But Joseph only points us to another...to Christ. Joseph is the type of the anti-type Christ! Christ came and made us children of God in whom the Spirit of God dwells! Paul the apostle said it,
Galatians 3:14 (ESV)
14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
The blessing of Abraham was that we would receive the promised Spirit! God's covenant with Abraham was that "He would be our God and we would be His people." Now we know that the indwelling Spirit was the way Abraham's blessing would happen!
Romans 8:14–15 (ESV)
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
All creation groans in childbirth and we groan for this redemption to be full. The very Spirit of God pointed to by a pagan foreign ruler in the second millennium is the Spirit promised to every child of Abraham. We Christians are given the Spirit as a guarantee of our inheritance in Christ. Live life in the Spirit and not the flesh. "Little children, keep yourselves from idols." (1 Jn 5:21)
